Remember that we are really describing force vectors, which means that any particular piece of a complex tensegrity could be functioning as both a cable and strut at the same time (depending on how it is considered within the hierarchy), or even change emphasis from one to the other during movement. Although each part might be influenced by multiple tension and compressional forces, one or the other state will always predominate at any particular point in time. The differences between what we call cables and struts in a biotensegrity context are thus relative, a useful way of functionally distinguishing between components, but they have their limitations.
